A Mad Scientist's View of Flash Fiction

The Mad Scientist likes to write about all sorts of things (see the links below). However it's always nice to venture into new areas periodically.

Flash fiction is a form of short-short story. Typically a piece of flash fiction is 1000 words or less. That makes it suitable for quick downloads on e-readers, tablets and phones. Not to mention it's very good discipline for any writer. The theme and characters must be developed immediately. The story must come to a conclusion by the one thousandth word. The added bonus for any writer or wannabe is that flash fiction is also fun to write!

Are Your Articles Being Stolen?

Publishing content on the Internet can be entertaining. In a few cases it can also be profitable. There are many content farms which encourage us to write for them and earn money. Minimal money of course. The real money goes to the owner of the Website through selling adverts. The Mad Scientist writes for one such content farm and has readers. That means we get a few pennies for each article. However, from time to time, the articles are republished on other sites without permission. This despite a warning at the top of the articles requesting (politely, of course) that this not be done. While it's a compliment to have someone steal our work, it also means we don't get paid for those stolen articles. Anyone publishing content should periodically check that their work hasn't been reproduced without permission. A notorious site for that is zimbio.com. People there just lift our work, even including the warning not to reproduce it. Here is an article about what to do: Are your articles being stolen ? ? Meanwhile keep writing!

A Mad Scientist's View of El Dia de Los Muertos

A Mad Scientist's View of El Dia de Los Muertos

This is the time of year when many cultures celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day. It is a time for honouring the dead while allowing life to go on for family members left behind.

It's a very colourful celebration in Mexico. Altars are built, graves decorated and fanciful skeletons and skulls appear everywhere.

Sugar skulls are a traditional Mexican art form. They are made from sugar mixed with egg white and packed into forms. The decorations range from simple to elaborate.

Examples of decorated sugar skulls (http://www.mexicansugarskull.com/)

The sugar skulls can also be made from salt dough (http://quazen.com/recreation/crafts/easy-crafts-for-children-salt-dough/) , plaster, clay or polymer clay.

Feasting is part of the celebration. Foods are prepared to place on the altars or on the family graves. Many of the sweets and breads are shaped like bones, skulls or skeletons.

Try this recipe for Pan de Muerto (or Bread of Death) for celebrating the Day of the Dead!

Buen provecho!

The Mad Scientist's View of Cats: We love our cats!

Like all good Mad Scientists, we love our cats. Their elegance and aloofness coupled with their occasional unconditional love make them suitable companions for any Mad Scientist. Here are some possibly entertaining articles about the Mad Scientist's cat entourage.

The Mad Scientist also participates in local trap-neuter-release programmes for feral and semiferal cats (such as the Commuter Kittens). The cats are expertly neutered/spayed, treated with antibiotics, vaccinated and have the left ear snipped/tipped. There is *no charge* for this service. We pick them up and release them back into their home environment to live out their lives in peace. The cats are checked to monitor their recovery; we also feed/water them and provide a place outside where they can sleep. Strays and feral cats sent to shelters who aren't adopted (and many ferals aren't adoptable) may end up euthanised. This is unnecessary and cruel! Be a responsible pet owner and get your cats (and dogs and rabbits) spayed/neutered.

The Mad Scientist Can Be Serious Too!

Acquaintances of the Mad Scientist know that 'Mad Scientist' is not a misnomer. However between a career in biomedical research and a sub-career in scientific/medical publishing, there are serious aspects to the Mad Scientist. The Internet provides many opportunities to publish short articles about serious subjects. They can be useful providers of small bits of information for interested (or not, as the case may be) readers.
